Every book necessarily resembles the traveller who wrote it. If its author is pure in heart, its unsullied pages are infused with the most beautiful emotions, the most extraordinary encounters. To travel in the truest sense, one must discard impediments and allow to bloom within oneself the nomadic spirit, so that worries of food and shelter become secondary, and relationships with others free from all self-interest. A soul so liberated accepts the imprint of the thousand and one splendours and sensations inspired by other communities or natural surroundings. Transboréal writers have surrendered to this etching of the soul, this gentle permeation which, in the Arctic for some, out at sea or in the desert for others, has changed them forever, so that they seek in their writings to assuage their nostalgia for smiles exchanged and shelters left behind, for lands traversed and paradises lost. To read their tales is to assist them in regaining all of this: it is like setting out with them anew. |
